Wet vs. Dry Porcelain Cutting: Why Your Wet Saw Is Costing You Serious Money

If you’ve spent more than five minutes on a residential jobsite lately, you know the drill.

You’re on the third floor of an old brownstone or tucked away in a tight primary bath remodel. The homeowner paid top dollar for 24x48 rectified porcelain slabs that are hard enough to stop a bullet. You mark your cut line, turn around, walk down two flights of stairs, trek through the backyard, fire up a howling, slurry-spewing wet saw, make a 30-second pass, walk all the way back up—only to find the drywall out of plumb by an eighth of an inch.

Down you go again.

At that rate, you aren't laying tile. You’re doing cardio with a piece of fragile clay in your hands.

For thirty years, the old-school dogma drilled into our heads was simple: Thou shalt cut porcelain wet, or thou shalt buy the client a new slab. Wet cutting was the sacred cow of our trade. But jobsite realities changed, porcelain got denser, and honestly, the math on wet saws stopped adding up on fast-paced jobs a long time ago.

Here is the unfiltered truth from someone who has run miles of tile over two decades: if you’re still defaulting to a water tray for every single cut, you’re bleeding billable hours.


The Dirty Truth About the Wet Saw Routine

Don’t get me wrong. If I’m ripping twenty 48-inch planks dead down the center in a wide-open garage on day one, a rigid sliding wet bridge has its place.

The problem is the other 85% of the job.

Setting up a wet rig is an absolute pain. You need a dedicated circuit that won’t pop when the pump kicks in alongside the motor. You need a drain plan or a tub for recycling gray runoff so you don’t kill the client’s hydrangeas. Then there’s the cold morning factor.
