How to Cut Curves in Porcelain Tile Without Chipping the Edge
There’s a big difference between cutting porcelain tile in a straight line and asking it to follow a curve.
A straight cut gives you room to breathe. A tight radius around a toilet flange, shower valve, drain, or rounded corner doesn’t. Push the wheel a little too hard, turn the grinder a little too fast, and that expensive tile can crack right where you were almost finished.
I’ve seen guys spend ten minutes marking a perfect curve, then destroy it in ten seconds by trying to make the whole cut in one pass.
That’s not bad luck. That’s the wrong technique.
If you want clean curved tile cutting, especially on hard porcelain tile, the trick is simple: don’t force the curve. Build it gradually.
Why Porcelain Tile Fights You on Curves
Porcelain is hard, dense, and unforgiving. That’s why it works so well on floors, showers, patios, and commercial installations.
It’s also why curved cuts can be a pain.
When you make a straight cut with a tile saw, the blade follows one predictable path. But once you start turning through a radius, the cutting edge is being asked to remove material while changing direction.
That’s where trouble starts.
A cheap abrasive wheel may get through the material, but getting through the tile isn’t the same thing as making a good cut. You can end up with chipped glaze, an ugly edge, too much heat, or a fracture running past your layout line.

Stop Trying to Cut the Finished Curve in One Pass
This is the mistake I see most often.
Say you’re fitting a porcelain floor tile around a toilet flange. You mark the circle, grab the grinder, bury the wheel into the tile, and immediately start steering around the line.
Bad move.
You’re asking the wheel to cut deep and turn at the same time. On a hard tile, that puts unnecessary stress into the material and makes the grinder harder to control.
The better approach is to remove material progressively.
Start by marking the curve clearly. Then make shallow relief cuts toward the waste side of your line. Think of them as giving the unwanted material somewhere to break away instead of forcing the entire section to come out at once.
Once the bulk is gone, you can creep toward the finished line.
That last part matters.
The first pass removes material. The final passes create accuracy.
Treat them like two different jobs.
The Old Way Works—Until the Cut Gets Complicated
Tile nippers, basic abrasive discs, and straight wet-saw cuts have been around forever. They still have their place.
But tight curved cuts expose their limitations fast.
Nippers can leave a rough edge and require a lot of cleanup. A standard tile saw is excellent for straight cuts but awkward when the layout calls for a controlled inside radius. Thin cutting discs can slice quickly, but some give you very little ability to clean and shape the edge afterward.

How to Cut a Curve With an Angle Grinder
Let’s use a common example: a porcelain tile that needs to fit around a pipe or fixture.
First, transfer your measurement carefully and mark the cut on the tile. If the finished opening will be covered by a trim plate or flange, know exactly how much tolerance you have. Don’t guess.
Set the tile on a stable surface with the waste area supported appropriately. Wear eye protection and proper respiratory protection, and control silica dust using methods appropriate for the material and jobsite.
Now start the grinder before contacting the tile.
Make the initial cuts shallow.
Don’t bury the diamond wheel to full depth and muscle your way around the curve. Work from the waste side and make several controlled passes. For tighter curves, make additional relief cuts so smaller sections can be removed without stressing the finished side of the tile.
As you approach the layout line, slow down.
This is where a cutting wheel that simply removes material fast isn’t always enough. You want control. With a wheel designed to both cut and grind, you can use the grinding surface to refine high spots instead of trying to steer the cutting edge through every tiny correction.
That’s the difference between cutting close to the line and finishing to the line.

You can usually tell when somebody is forcing an angle grinder.
The motor loads up. The wheel stops cutting freely. The operator starts leaning harder into the tool.
That doesn’t make the job better.
A quality diamond wheel should remove material through the exposed diamond abrasive. Your job is to guide the tool and maintain control—not see how much body weight you can put behind a 4-1/2-inch grinder.
Use steady pressure.
Keep the grinder moving.
And don’t get greedy.
If you’re one-eighth of an inch away from your line, don’t try to grab the whole eighth in one aggressive pass. Take a little material, check the curve, and take a little more.
Porcelain doesn’t care that you’re in a hurry.
Where Precision Cutting Actually Matters
A lot of curved cuts disappear underneath something.
Toilet flanges. Pipe escutcheons. Drain covers. Trim.
That doesn’t mean accuracy suddenly stops mattering.
Make the opening too tight and the tile may not seat correctly. Make it too large and the trim might not cover your mistake. Worse, an uncontrolled cut can leave cracks that become a problem later.
The same principle applies when working around shower plumbing, rounded architectural details, or exposed tile edges.
For visible work, the stakes are even higher.
That’s where having both cutting and grinding capability becomes useful. After roughing out the opening, you can gradually smooth the curve until the profile looks intentional instead of chewed out.
