How Many Teeth Should a Circular Saw Blade Have?

If your circular saw is burning through batteries, chewing up plywood edges, or taking forever to make a simple cut, don’t blame the saw yet.

Look at the blade. More specifically, count the teeth.

A lot of guys buy circular saw blades the same way they buy drill bits: right diameter, right arbor, done. But tooth count changes how a blade behaves almost as much as the saw driving it.

A 24 tooth blade can rip through framing lumber all morning. Put a 60 tooth blade into the same job and you may get a prettier cut—but you’ll also get more heat, slower feed, and a saw that feels like it suddenly lost horsepower.

So, how many teeth should a circular saw blade have?

For most jobsite wood cutting, 24T is the workhorse. Around 40T is the middle ground when you want a cleaner finish without giving up too much speed. And 60T or higher belongs on finish work where the cut edge actually matters.

That’s the short answer.

Now let’s talk about why.

Tooth Count Is Really About What Happens Inside the Cut

Every tooth on a circular saw blade removes a small chip of material.

Give the blade fewer teeth and each tooth has more room to bite, clear chips, and keep moving. That makes a lower blade tooth count aggressive and fast.

Add more teeth and each tooth removes less material per pass. The blade tends to leave a smoother edge, but there are more teeth rubbing through the cut, which means more resistance and potentially more heat.

That tradeoff is what matters.

Think about a framing crew cutting 2x4s, blocking, sheathing, and rough lumber all day. Nobody is standing there admiring the polished edge of a stud that’s about to disappear behind drywall.

They want the cut made.

Fast.

That’s where a 24 tooth circular saw blade earns its keep.

Now walk inside to a guy cutting cabinet panels or trim material.

Different job. Different priorities.

He’d gladly trade some cutting speed for a cleaner edge that doesn’t need another ten minutes of sanding or cleanup.

That’s where higher tooth counts start making sense.

24 Tooth Blade: The Jobsite Workhorse

If somebody told me I could throw only one general-purpose blade into the truck for rough construction work, I’d lean toward 24T.

No hesitation.

A good 24 tooth blade is built to move material. Framing lumber, dimensional wood, OSB, plywood, decking, general renovation work—this is the territory where lower tooth counts make sense.

You’ll notice the difference immediately when making repeated crosscuts.

The saw feeds easier.

The motor doesn’t sound like it’s fighting the board.

And on cordless circular saws, that matters even more. Every bit of unnecessary cutting resistance comes out of the battery.

What About a 40 Tooth Blade?

Here’s where things get interesting.

A 40 tooth blade sits right in that useful middle ground between a rough framing blade and a fine-finish blade.

You still get respectable cutting speed, but the cut is generally cleaner than what you’d expect from a 24T framing blade.

Say you’re remodeling a house.

In the morning, you’re cutting framing lumber. After lunch, you’re cutting plywood panels, shelving, and a few pieces where the homeowner is actually going to see the edge.

You could swap blades every time the material changes.

Most guys won’t.

That’s why 40T general-purpose blades are popular. They’re compromises—and in this case, that’s not an insult.

They don’t rip as aggressively as a good 24T blade, and they usually won’t leave the same finish as a dedicated high-tooth-count blade.

But they cover a lot of ground.

If your circular saw spends its life bouncing between rough construction and cleaner shop-style cuts, 40T makes sense.

When Does a 60 Tooth Blade Make Sense?

A 60 tooth blade is where I stop thinking about speed first and start thinking about the finished edge.

This is the blade you reach for when tear-out costs you time.

Think plywood with a finished veneer, cabinet components, trim, or other material where a ragged edge means sanding, filling, recutting, or throwing the piece away.

More teeth make smaller bites.

Smaller bites generally mean a smoother cut.

But here’s the mistake I see people make: they assume that because a 60T blade produces a cleaner cut, it must be a “better” blade.

No.

It’s a better blade for the right job.

Put that same fine-tooth blade into repetitive rough framing cuts and you’re solving a problem that doesn’t exist while creating two new ones: slower feed and more heat.

That’s not craftsmanship.

That’s using the wrong blade.

24T vs. 40T vs. 60T: Pick for the Job, Not the Number

Forget the idea that higher tooth count automatically means higher quality.

It doesn’t.

A framing carpenter making fifty cuts through dimensional lumber gets more value from an aggressive 24T blade than from a fine 60T blade.

A cabinetmaker cutting expensive veneered plywood may say the exact opposite.

Both are right.

The blade has to match the work.

As a practical rule, think of it this way:

  • 24T: framing, rough cuts, dimensional lumber, fast general construction work.
  • 40T: general-purpose cutting when you want a balance of speed and finish.
  • 60T+: finish cuts, plywood veneers, trim, cabinetry, and applications where edge quality matters more than speed.

That’s about as complicated as it needs to be.

Material Matters Just as Much as Tooth Count

There’s one more thing worth saying because it saves expensive mistakes.

Don’t choose a blade by tooth count alone.

Blade construction and intended material matter.

A carbide-tipped wood blade and a specialty blade designed for fiber cement may have similar dimensions, but they are built for completely different cutting conditions.

Fiber cement and calcium silicate board are highly abrasive. Run the wrong conventional wood blade through enough of it and you can wear down the cutting edges faster than expected.

You lose time pushing a fine blade through rough lumber.

You lose material when an aggressive framing blade tears up a finished panel.

And you burn through blades when you use them on materials they weren’t designed to handle.

So keep it simple.

Need speed on framing lumber? Run 24T.

Need one blade to cover a little bit of everything? Look around 40T.

Need the cleanest possible wood cut? Move toward 60T or higher.

And when the material changes from wood to something abrasive like fiber cement, stop counting teeth and start looking at blade construction.
